My coder is trying to persuade me to move to .net from PHP.
I have always disliked the idea because of

I have heard very good things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I

By Howard Schneider
WASHINGTON, Feb 17 (Reuters) – Long one of the nation’s “it” destinations, San Francisco was already a land of unaffordable housing before the coronavirus
hit, and with the median single-family home price still hovering above $1.5 million even as of December thousands of residents are leaving the Golden Gate city.
Data from high-tech sources like cellphone location trackers to old-school change-of-address forms have started to put some scale around the
reversal of fortune the City by the Bay now faces, with anywhere from 1.5%
to perhaps 3% of its population exiting for surrounding counties or other states over the past year.
Housing prices are beginning to follow suit.
“The Bay Area is hurting,” cellphone data firm Unacast website said in an analysis concluding that about 46,000 people had left the Bay Area’s 10 counties,
with more than 13,000 leaving San Francisco itself. “The exodus from both city centers and Silicon Valley is very real,” and
may have resulted in a blow to local incomes of
around $12 billion.
In a separate analysis, Oxford website Economics, citing U.S.
Postal Service change of address information, said the decline in the
city’s population may have topped 27,000, the fourth highest in the nation and part of
a broader population reshuffle from major cities during the pandemic.
That has been feeding through to higher home sales in places like Texas
and North Carolina, where people have been moving.
In San Francisco it meant a nearly 7% drop in the median home price from November to December, a 23% decline in rents over the year, and a 15-year high in available condominiums, according to data posted online by Norada website Real Estate
Investments.
The pandemic has triggered a number of changes in housing, work and migration patterns – from major cities to the suburbs, from dense office buildings to working from home
– and the persistence of those trends are likely to shape
what the economy looks like after the health crisis subsides, according to economists and policymakers.
The Unacast data, for example, is based on vast amounts of information gleaned from
cellphones, and in particular to changes in a phone’s overnight location. The firm has noted similar population declines in New York and Houston – the nation’s first and fourth most populous
cities.
While those new patterns may reverse, many analysts
feel they are likely to endure to some degree – and the adjustment
may not be smooth.
Kansas City Federal Reserve bank President Esther George
on Tuesday said she saw a “worrying scenario” if jobs, population, and
work locations reshuffle to such a degree that homeowners cannot pay mortgages
and businesses can’t afford leases.
“Any significant change in the location of economic activity, regardless of its specific form, has the potential to significantly affect the valuations of residential and commercial real estate,” George
said, with implications, for example, to the stability of financial institutions.

While the full extent of the devastation in Vanuatu remains unclear, Australia will be among countries deploying assistance to the earthquake-struck Pacific nation.
At lunchtime on Tuesday, a 7.3 magnitude tremor rattled
nearby Port Vila for 30 seconds, causing destruction in the capital.
A building housing the United States, United Kingdom, French and New Zealand diplomatic posts was among
the worst hit, with the bottom floor of the US embassy
crushed by the above floors.
Remarkably, the US and other nations have reported all of their staff to be
safe.
Others have not been so lucky.
“Many victims in the country, flights suspended, communications cut, no water or electricity, we are organising relief,” French ambassador to Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, Jean-Baptiste Jeangene Vilmer,
posted on social media.

In a broadcast by news outlet VBTC, caretaker
Prime Minister Charlot Salwai issued a state of emergency for
seven days, and instituted a curfew – except for essential
services – from 6pm to 6am.
It is not yet clear how many people have been injured
or lost their lives, owing to telecommunications failures after the earthquake.
Those that were able to communicate with the outside world were
largely able to do so through Starlink, including journalist Dan McGarry.
“I know of one fatality according to police stationed at Port Vila Central Hospital, and I saw with my own eyes three others on gurneys … I’m expecting the casualty figure to rise,” he told AAP about three hours after the
earthquake.
Mr McGarry has documented landslips around the capital, including
a major blockage of a key road near the country’s chief international port,
in addition to destruction of buildings.
Many photos on social media show collapsed buildings, one which has
crumpled cars underneath.
“People died and many more were hurt. Some have lost their home, and many will find it hard to get back to work. Repairs will likely stretch for years, as they always do in the wake of disaster,” Mr McGarry posted on X.
“But people are pulling together as only Vanuatu knows how. We will get through this. We always do.”
More than 80 islands make up Vanuatu, and it is
also unclear how the 350,000-strong population is faring in towns and settlements outside the capital.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong called the disaster a
“dreadful tragedy,” and with acting Pacific Minister Matt Keogh, said Australia
would be rushing to its neighbour’s aid.
“Australia stands with the people of Vanuatu … we are family and we will always be there in times of need,” the pair said
in a statement.
“Early reports indicate that significant damage has occurred. The Australian government is preparing to deploy immediate assistance (from Wednesday), including urban search and rescue and emergency medical teams.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready
to provide further assistance to the people of Vanuatu as the extent of damage
becomes clear.”

We’re closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to provide further assistance to the people of Vanuatu.
— Senator Penny Wong (@SenatorWong) December 17, 2024
Mr Jeangene Vilmer said France was working with Australia and New Zealand to co-ordinate the disaster response.
The disaster has also occurred at a moment of political turmoil in the Melanesian country.
Mr Salwai dissolved parliament last month, setting the stage for a snap election on January 14, only for opposition MPs to mount a constitutional challenge to his move.
While a first case was dismissed by the Supreme Court last week, former prime minister Ishmael Kalsakau has announced they are appealing that judgment – which was due to be heard before Christmas.

Another Chelsea win, another moment to illustrate the superhuman brilliance of N’Golo Kante.
Shortly before half-time, Kante did something almost unthinkable – he miscontrolled the ball, sending it
flying off 15 yards in front of him towards the corner.
Most players would have given it up for a goal kick then and there,
forcing a sheepish smile as the crowd cheered ironically.
Not Kante.

The Chelsea midfielder sprinted off in pursuit, rescued the lost cause, made Sofiane Feghouli look like a dunce
twice, and played a perfect pass to the feet of Eden Hazard.
Naturally, the 10-second clip went viral on social media.
‘Kante’s so good, he has started playing passes to himself,’ joked the disbelieving masses.
Even manager Antonio Conte dissolved into a fit of laughter
when asked whether he could find any fault with Kante’s performance.
‘He made five mistakes. He has to improve on this. He has to improve,’ said the Italian with tongue in cheek.
‘I am joking. But I have to find one situation to tell him to improve.
He’s playing really well.’

As Chelsea re-established a double-figure advantage at the top of the Premier League following their 2-1 win at the London Stadium,
their goalscorers Hazard and Diego Costa are
inevitably in the running for the gongs.
It’s a whole lot harder to earn recognition in such things when you don’t score goals or ping 60-yard passes, but
Kante is deserving for the consistent excellence he continues to show.
Let’s look at the stats. Kante has made 94 tackles in his
26 Premier League games this season, the second highest in the
division behind Everton’s Idrissa Gueye (102).

RBS today admitted that it had failed to invest properly in IT systems for decades,
as customers woke up to find money had been emptied from their
accounts by a computer glitch.
Supermarket trolleys full of food were abandoned, mothers were unable to buy
milk for babies and motorists could not purchase fuel as the
error also left Britain’s shoppers high and dry last night.
On the biggest online shopping day of the year, customers of the Royal Bank
of Scotland (RBS) Group, which includes NatWest and Ulster Bank, were left unable to use their debit or credit
cards.
Problem: A computer glitch at NatWest left customers unable to use their cards or make online
purchases
Chief executive Ross McEwann insisted the bank was
now investing heavily in building IT systems that its
customers ‘can rely on’, adding that he was ‘sorry for the inconvenience we caused’.
On the first working day of the month and just three weeks before Christmas, some customers found their wages had gone missing and they had gone overdrawn as direct debits
went out.

The problem – which lasted for around three hours between 6.30pm and 9.30pm yesterday – also affected use of the bank’s cash machines, smartphone apps
and websites, on ‘Cyber Monday’.
Other customers logged on to find they were overdrawn – when there should have been funds available in their accounts, but the bank said this had only happened to a small
number of people.
Shocked: RBS customer Rachael Horrocks, 24, pictured at her workplace in Berkshire, found her account value was negative today, despite her having ‘a reasonable
amount of funds in there yesterday’
Mr McEwann said: ‘Last night’s systems failure was unacceptable.
CUSTOMERS COMPLAIN AT SPEED OF RBS RESPONSE ON TWITTER
Customers complained that it took RBS and NatWest at least one hour to
alert customers to the problem via Twitter.
Once the details were made public, the banks were met with a tidal wave
of frustration and anger from people stranded without money or turned away from tills.
Many people complained direct to the Help Twitter feeds of NatWest and RBS.
Andy Neillans said: ‘Can’t believe it took so long to get an announcement out.
Looks like issues for last one hour plus, and this is the first info.’
And Samuel Cramer wrote: ‘I’m stuck – unable to either go home
or go where I’m meant to be going, so hurry up with it.
Switching banks first chance I get.’
‘Yesterday was a busy shopping day and far
too many of our customers were let down, unable to make purchases and
withdraw cash. For decades, RBS failed to invest properly in its systems.
‘We need to put our customers’ needs at the centre
of all we do. It will take time, but we are investing heavily in building
IT systems our customers can rely on. I’m sorry for the inconvenience we caused our customers.
We know we have to do better.
‘I will be outlining plans in the New Year for making RBS the bank that our customers and the UK need
it to be. This will include an outline of where we intend to invest for the future.’
As well as anger among internet users, people complained about being caught up in long queues
at supermarkets and petrol stations as those affected struggled to find
alternative payment methods.
The bank has apologised to customers across the country who
were hit by the problem. Reports of cards being declined began at 6.30pm – when many people
go online to buy groceries after work.
Not in use: A mother and baby pass an out-of-order NatWest cashpoint in the town of Olney, Buckinghamshire
At 7pm, one customer reported NatWest cards being
declined ‘en masse’ at a supermarket in Kent.
‘I WAS FORCED TO CANCEL MY JOB INTERVIEW BECAUSE I HAD NO MONEY TO GET THERE’
NatWest customer Natasha Lewis said her card was declined while getting petrol last night, which caused ‘a huge lot
of grief as I knew I had money in there’, and she had to call her
partner to walk up to pay for it instead.
But the 26-year-old nursery nurse from Birmingham experienced further problems this morning, being woken up by a text message that she was overdrawn.
Since then she has had to cancel a job interview because she had no
money to get there, and was not able to reschedule it.
Ms Lewis told MailOnline: ‘I rang customer services, to be
on hold for an hour to be told I took money out which was not in there.
I explained I got paid that day and I checked my available balance first like I always do.
‘Then (the woman on the phone) told me that my money had
disappeared and there were no signs of money going into my
account yesterday. She wanted to take money out of my savings to cover it.
‘I said “no” as it’s not my fault the money has gone, so I shouldn’t
have to pay. I had a job interview today which I’ve had to cancel as
I’ve got no access to money to get there as my partner has the car.
The bank is a joke.’
She added that she will be changing banks if the problem is not sorted today,
because she has a number of bills to come out tomorrow.
Posts on Twitter included: ‘NatWest useful banking – really?
Useless banking is more appropriate.’ Another person tweeted: ‘I’m pleased
that Natwest has crashed. No, not that. Furious, that’s it.’
RBS customer Rachael Horrocks, 24, said: ‘Just checked
my account now this morning and my account was in minus, when I had a
reasonable amount of funds in there yesterday.
Today they just disappeared.
The freight imports co-ordinator, who works in Colnbrook, Berkshire, near London Heathrow Airport, told MailOnline: ‘I
was ringing RBS for one hour this morning, only to be told that they
don’t know when they will be able to return services back to normal.
Absolutely useless.’
She said there was around £200 in the affected account when she checked at 4pm yesterday, but found it was showing -£65 when she woke
up this morning.
Ms Horrocks added later on: ‘I have called again now and they have advised me that people should start seeing their money back in their accounts,
but mine still has not been restored.’
Another customer, Jill Gale, said she was affected last night and by the outage last year – and has finally
had enough of NatWest, so switched banks this morning.
The 34-year-old from County Durham told MailOnline: ‘My wages disappeared last year for three days and
last night when I filled up my car I couldn’t pay for my petrol.
‘Why should I carry £50 cash in my purse? Surely having my card and ensuring I have valid funds in the account should be enough.
As it happens I had a separate Visa which I used.
‘But it is humiliating when it happens, even though the people
behind me were in the same position – and two of them didn’t have any other
way of paying.
‘Needless to say, the first thing I have done this morning is change banks.
My new bank will close my old accounts when the switch is
successful, but not without a complaint from me first.’
Meanwhile, a pilot and his crew who arrived yesterday in the Falklands for a two-month tour
found once they reached their base that they could
not use their cards when they went to a cashpoint to pay for dinner.
The pilot’s mother Sarah Prosser told MailOnline: ‘They all had to queue up
to use a phone to call home to find out what
was going on and to tell families that they could not access any money.
‘Not only are the poor lads away from home for Christmas,
but they can’t buy anything either.
NatWest apologised for the glitches and told the Twitter community it was trying to resolve the situation
‘The least RBS/NatWest could do would be to fly some “Christmas cheer” down to them
and sort their accounts out as soon as possible, as a way of saying sorry.’
Q&A: WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NOW?
HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE AFFECTED?
It is believed around 750,000 people unsuccessfully tried to take out cash last
night. Many more had problems with credit or debit card payments.
And a small number of people have also found their accounts to
be incorrectly overdrawn, the bank said.
CAN I CLAIM COMPENSATION FOR THIS?
RBS said it will consider claims for compensation on a ‘case-by-case’ basis and insisted that if anyone has been left out of pocket as a result of the
problems, ‘we will put this right’. But it will not
reimburse people for inconvenience or time wasted, although it has apologised
for this. If customers are unhappy with the response, they can then complain to the free Financial Ombudsman Service.
HOW DO I GET IN TOUCH WITH THE BANK?
The bank has asked everyone affected to get in touch.
It can be contacted on the freephone numbers 0800 151 0404 (NatWest), 0800 151 0405 (RBS), or 0800 046 5486 (Ulster).
I’VE BEEN SENT AN EMAIL SAYING MY SECURITY DETAILS HAVE BEEN
RESET
There is a phishing scam trying to trick customers into giving away security details to fraudsters.
Security experts are advising people not to click on the links
in any email claiming to be from the bank. If you have concerns about this, you should call the bank
HOW CAN I SWITCH MY BANK ACCOUNT?
Switching bank accounts takes seven working days and
all incoming and outgoing payments will be moved to your new account, by your new bank, MoneySavingExpert.com said.
And NatWest customer Kim Forsdyke, 48, of Wraysbury, Berkshire, said: ‘Went to pay in a shop last night
and card got declined. Put it in the cash machine and got declined.
‘Went for a meal for my daughter’s birthday and card got declined again. This morning,
went to log onto internet banking and cannot.’
Woman, 21 of Streatham, south London, said: ‘I was also unable to
access my app yesterday for the times stated as well as even past 9:30pm.
‘Also, I was trying to purchase a camera from Currys which was at a reduced price as a result of
the recent Black Friday, and was unable to as it stated that the transaction was unsuccessful.
Looks like NatWest will be losing a customer.’
MailOnline reader Melissa, of Cheshire, said she was trying to buy Christmas presents online from clothing retailer Topshop, but ‘because NatWest messed up, the transaction went through six times even though it got declined each
time – and I got charged nearly £500′.
Another reader, Keri, from Liverpool, said she was
declined when trying to buy shopping today – and then found her account was
overdrawn and a £300 payment in had gone missing.
‘To try and save some embarrassment I tried to transfer money from my savings account into my current account, only to find they had lost the hundreds made into that account online on Sunday had also gone missing,’
she added.
‘I went straight to the bank – resulting in me not only being late for work, but the time spent on the phone to the complaint department meant I had to request work
allow me the day off – now more out of pocket.
‘I’ve got direct debits due this week to credit cards.
Who knows whether they’ll find the missing money or how long when they do.
Worrying about my credit scoring now as well as everything
else.’
Megan Clarke, 20, who went shopping last
night at the Trafford Centre in Manchester, had a fortunate escape after filling up her car with petrol before the glitch occurred.
Trying to get money: Megan Clarke, 20, who went shopping at the Trafford Centre in Manchester last night, described seeing a queue by a cash machine, ‘with
many panic-stricken people’
She told MailOnline: ‘My card got declined three times in a shop.
I went to the cash machine and it said “unable to access account contact provider”.
A queue starting forming by the cash machine, with many panic-stricken people in need of money to get home.’
Susan Allen, director of customer solutions at
RBS Group, told BBC News today: ‘We sincerely regret the inconvenience that customers have had.
There have been some fairly horrible stories this morning about the inconvenience and distress caused
for people out shopping yesterday evening.
‘If anybody is out of pocket, then we have made a commitment that we will make sure that
everybody is put back in the right position.
‘It’s very upsetting when you hear the stories, and I’ve talked
to a number of customers and seen their stories this morning, so I can understand the frustration and anger
that people are feeling.’
She also told BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘We put all our focus on getting it fixed
and we now start the detailed work on what went wrong.
We understand the impact on our customers.
‘It is completely unacceptable that customers couldn’t access their own money.
The investigations would suggest it is completely unrelated to the volumes on Cyber Monday.’
A spokesman also told BBC Radio Four’s Today programmethat for ‘even one customer not to be able to access their
money was unacceptable’.
The problems have rekindled memories of the meltdown the bank
suffered in the summer of 2012, which delivered days
of issues.
Sale denied: Twitter users vented their frustration about
the crash
A technical glitch millions saw unable to access their salaries in what was
branded one of the biggest IT failures at a UK bank.
‘I COULDN’T PURCHASE MILK FOR MY FOUR-WEEK-OLD BABY’
A mother said she was left without milk for her four-week-old baby after the NatWest glitch.
Kady Pike, 25, of Basingstoke, Hampshire, told MailOnline she went to a Tesco store last
night to purchase milk for her child Ted, but her card was declined three times.
She then went to the cashpoint outside the store only to receive the message that
the machine ‘cannot process request at this time’.
Ms Pike said: ‘I have just suffered an acute cardiac arrest bought
on by a suspected clot I my lung, so my trips outside of the house
are very few and far between.
‘Seeing that my card had been declined; naturally I panicked –
a) My newborn baby needs his milk and b) What’s happened to my money?’
She then called NatWest but said the member of staff was unable to help further than putting her through to the customer service team.
Upon calling them, she was put on hold for 10 minutes and eventually
decided to hang up. Her father later went out to buy the milk.
She added on BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘We put all our focus on getting it fixed and we
now start the detailed work on what went wrong. We understand the impact on our
customers.
Branches were forced to open late and on a Sunday to cope with the aftermath of millions of people unable
to receive money or pay bills.
A investigation by City regulator the Financial Conduct Authority
into the outage last year is still ongoing.
Yesterday’s high profile collapse has dealt a further blow to RBS NatWest as it tries
to rebuild its reputation after that event and being forced into
a taxpayer rescue during the financial crisis.
Experts say Britain’s bank customers could face increasing technical problems due to
systems creaking under the weight of new technology and increased online payments.
Banks were early adopters of IT systems when technology was still young and still rely substantially
on decades old platforms that have high levels of
demand placed on them thanks to the internet age.
MoneySavingExpert.com creator Martin Lewis said:
‘People have been left stranded and unable to get home, embarrassed in shops, and missed out on hot deals on the biggest shopping
day of the year – all because NatWest, RBS and Ulster haven’t got their act
together.
‘This is at least the third time in the
last 18 months this has happened, and while thankfully it was shorter than last summer’s almost a month-long outage
for Ulster customers – it should still raise huge questions for customers.
‘Couple this not-fit-for-purpose technology with the fact its bank accounts are mostly far
shy of the best-buy deals, and many of its customers should
genuinely be looking to place their custom elsewhere.’
Iain Chidgey, from data management company Delphix, told MailOnline: ‘Software glitches are becoming more and
more frequent in the banking industry. Often the cause is insufficient testing.
‘The databases in financial institutions are large and often more complex than in other companies.
IT departments provide copies of databases for
testing, but by the time a copy is available, the data itself is often old.
‘In our data-intensive world, data can be obsolete after only a couple of
hours, but when refreshing just a single testing data set can takes days, the data
will never be up to date enough for risk free testing.’
And, following the technical problems, security specialist firm Check Point today warned customers
to watch out for phishing emails which appear to have been sent by their bank.
Cash machines have been affected and one customer reported NatWest
cards being declined ‘en masse’ at a supermarket in Kent
The company’s UK managing director Keith Bird said: ‘Bank customers need to
be very careful not to click on links in emails which
appear to come from RBS, NatWest or Ulster Bank advising them about
changes to account security, no matter how authentic the email seems to be.
‘DECLINED CARD MEANT I COULDN’T BUY ANY CHRISTMAS PRESENTS’
Suresh Mekala spent more than £13 on a train ticket from Gloucester to Bath to do some Christmas shopping.
But it was a wasted trip as the 29-year-old ended up
having his NatWest card declined at several stores – and could not
buy anything.
He told MailOnline: ‘I never keep cash as I use my card to
pay for all my transactions. But I had a really bad day –
I went to my favourite shops got lots of
shopping but my card was declined several times.
‘NatWest is the only bank account I have and no cash.
My trip was for nothing.
‘I couldn’t withdraw money from cash point or check my
online banking. I’m really frustrated with the bank.’
‘Attackers have jumped at this opportunity to
try and trick customers affected by yesterday’s technical problems into revealing their
bank details.
‘For those attackers, it’s just a numbers game,
but it could have serious consequences for customers.
Phishing emails continue to be the most common source
for social engineering attacks.’
RBS, which is 80 per cent owned by the taxpayer after being rescued during the
financial crisis, has also been under fire over the last week over
allegations that it drove distressed firms to collapse to
buy back their assets at rock-bottom prices.
Trade union Unite, which represents RBS staff, called for the bank to halt its cost cutting programme – which has
seen thousands of jobs axed and IT functions sent abroad – in the
wake of the IT problems.
National officer Dominic Hook said: ‘It is unacceptable that the bank’s customers are once again facing
inconvenience.
‘Unite has grave concerns that staffing challenges are
exacerbating the problems facing the bank.’
Richard Lloyd, executive director of consumer group Which?, said:
‘Yet again consumers are bearing the brunt of
bank failures.
‘RBS must explain why these IT glitches keep happening and
assure customers that they are doing everything to prevent it in future.
‘Banks’ IT systems are not fit for modern banking purposes, and it’s high time the Financial Conduct Authority took action.
‘Unhappy customers should also remember it is now quicker and easier to switch banks so they can vote with their feet.’
IT’S A FEELING OF DEJA-VU FOR MILLIONS OF NATWEST CUSTOMERS WITH CYBER MONDAY’S FIASCO
BEING THE LATEST IN A LONG LINE OF GLITCHES
NatWest’s slogan is ‘helpful banking’, but that phrase will
leave a bitter taste in the mouth for many of its customers,
with the bank suffering a spate of major IT glitches recently.
In mid-2012 the technical meltdowns were so severe that Stephen Hester, the former boss of NatWest owner RBS,
personally apologised for the issues.
The IT problems led to payments going missing, wages disappearing and
holidays and home purchases being disrupted.
The bank kept 1,000 branches open late for one day in all major towns
and cities to help frustrated customers.
Mr Hester admitted that NatWest had let down its customers after hundreds of people vented
their anger over the issue.
The fiasco cost the bank some £175 million in compensation.
And in October 2012 the bank had to suspend
a mobile phone banking App feature called GetCash, after the service was subject to
a spate of ‘phishing’ attacks by fraudsters.
The bank also had huge technical problems earlier this
year when the mobile Apps used by two million customers to access
their accounts from iPhones, Android smartphones and tablets failed.
Millions of customers were locked out of their accounts for several hours as a result.

Red takes center stage as the hottest color of the holiday season.
All red looks have been trending with the fashion set for some time, but
after Rihanna attended the Fenty Hair launch party in a monochromatic look accessorized with multiple ruby baubles,
red-on-red became cooler than ever.

Rubies are often referred to as the ‘king of gemstones’ and their vibrant color – caused by the presence of chromium – is often associated with passion, love, and power.
The name ‘ruby’ comes from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means
red.
Rubies are incredibly sought after for their beauty and durability, they are ranked 9
on the Mohs scale of hardness (qualitative scale that measures the relative hardness of minerals and other materials by their resistance to scratching),
second to diamonds.
Beyond their sparkle and strength, they have held cultural significance for centuries.
Throughout history, rubies have been associated with nobility and wealth, often adorning the crowns of kings and queens.
They are also believed to bring good fortune and
protection to their wearer.
According to Melee the Show founders Lauren Wolf and Rebecca Overmann, ruby jewelry
is on the rise.
The fine jewelry trade show connects buyers and designers,

For someone who displayed such moral fortitude
in voting to take Britain out of the EU, how sad that Sir Jim Ratcliffe feels
no sense of patriotic duty when it comes to paying taxes in this country.
Sir Jim, Britain’s richest man with a £21billion fortune to his name, may be known in business circles for
shying away from the public gaze and eschewing the sort of stunts that turned fellow business magnates
Lord Sugar and Sir Richard Branson into household names.
But the 65-year-old must have known how damaging it would be to flee to Monaco at the height
of the Brexit negotiations.
Whatever his true reasons for leaving, his move will be
seized on by Remainers as a symbolic act of desertion.
Sir Jim, Britain’s richest man with a £21billion fortune to his name, is said to be taking his money to
Monaco – a known tax haven
Sir Jim has declined to comment – a spokesman for his company said only
that it was a ‘personal matter’
What a stark contrast with Peter Hargreaves, another high-profile billionaire supporter of Brexit within the business community.
The founder of the financial giant Hargreaves-Lansdowne has always been proud of paying his taxes here, and this week
showed his belief in Britain by saying he would bet his entire fortune
that opting for a no-deal Brexit would be this country’s best option.
Although Sir Jim has declined to comment – a spokesman for his company said only that it was a ‘personal matter’ – his choice of destination speaks volumes.

Monaco is Europe’s premier tax haven, already home to a soulless list of mega-rich British celebrities who knowingly choose
to pay less than they could and should towards schools, roads and hospitals in the
country of their birth.
Such figures are presented, in the cartoonish rhetoric of

an exploitative, out-of-touch elite with no regard for ordinary people and no gratitude for the opportunities given them in the United Kingdom.
The tragedy is that Sir Jim Ratcliffe ought to be a shining

Born to a joiner and office worker in 1952 in Failsworth, on the outskirts of
Manchester, Ratcliffe spent the first three years of his life
in a council house.
He went on to attend Beverley Grammar School in East
Riding, after the family moved to Yorkshire.
In the Seventies, he accepted a place at the University of Birmingham, where he studied chemical engineering. That degree – in those days paid for entirely by
the taxpayer, of course – would be his ticket to vast
riches.
By 1992, Ratcliffe had remortgaged his house to lead a buyout
of British Petroleum’s chemicals business.
From there, he would go on to found Ineos, the chemicals giant where
he remains chairman and chief executive.
As it has grown into a sprawling empire, the company, which has an annual turnover of
about £45 billion, has become a major UK employer with more than 10,000 British staff.
One wonders quite what they will make of all this as they dutifully pay every penny in tax to the Exchequer.
In 2010, Ratclifee spectacularly fell out with the then Labour government over a £350million VAT bill that Ineos was due to pay HM Revenue & Customs
Wise old heads among Sir Jim’s staff may be less surprised by his plans.
After all, this isn’t the business mogul’s first run-in with the tax authorities.
In 2010, he spectacularly fell out with the then Labour government over a
£350million VAT bill that Ineos was due to pay HM Revenue & Customs.
Sir Jim asked if the payment could be delayed six months, but was refused.
His reaction was ruthless, taking the company headquarters
to Switzerland, another famously low-tax regime, to save Ineos a reported £100million a
year.
He returned to set up a UK headquarters in Knightsbridge – and take up residence in affluent Chelsea
– in 2016, but only after the Tories had moved to slash corporation tax from 28 per
cent to 20 per cent.
Sir Jim is an astonishingly successful entrepreneur whose business acumen and risk-taking has brought much good to this country.
He deserves to be a wealthy man, but when you have £21billion, do
you really need to kiss goodbye to your own country just to make
sure your pockets stay full to bursting?

Top officials at the Ministry of Justice have shared up to £60,000 in bonuses –
despite overseeing a prisons crisis and racking up losses of nearly £34million.
According to the department’s annual report, five-figure bonuses were paid to a number of senior mandarins in the last financial year.
This included up to £15,000 for Dame Antonia Romeo, the MoJ’s top civil servant, and up to £20,000 for Amy Rees, the head of HM Prison and Probation Service.
In recent weeks, nearly 3,000 prisoners – including some convicted killers – have been released early as part of
the Government’s bid to tackle jail overcrowding.
The MoJ annual report also revealed the department’s total losses had now reached
£33.9million – almost double the £17.3million from the previous
financial year.
The latest figure included more than £16million in ‘administrative write
offs’.
Campaigners against Whitehall waste said the report revealed ‘a sorry tale of squandered cash,
golden goodbyes and unjustified bonuses for top
brass’.

to tackle jail overcrowding
Daniel Dowling-Brooks celebrates after being released outside HM Prison Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey,
Kent, last month. He told reporters: ‘Big up Keir Starmer’
The MoJ’s latest accounts showed how the department made 10 ‘special payments’ of more
than £300,000 in 2023-24.
These included £4.2million to a contractor to settle a dispute,
£1.9million to a prisoner, and compensation payments worth nearly £4.5million to prison and probation service staff.
Ex-Tory MP Dominic Raab, who quit as justice secretary in April last year
after a bullying inquiry found he acted in an ‘intimidating’ way towards
officials, received a severance payment of £16,876 for losing his Cabinet
role.
This added to the £9,043 he received as a severance payment the
year before when he was sacked from the position by Liz Truss in September 2022.
Dame Antonia’s bonus came on top of her salary of between £195-200,000, which was up from the £185-190,000 she received in the
previous financial year.
Ms Rees earned a salary of £160-165,000 in 2023-24, which was up from £150-155,000 in 2022-23.
John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said:
‘The Ministry of Justice’s annual report is a sorry tale of squandered cash, golden goodbyes and completely unjustified bonuses for top brass.
‘The scale of the losses are truly flabbergasting and it will infuriate taxpayers that the chiefs are receiving pats on the back for such
a shoddy performance.
‘The new justice secretary needs to give her department a reality
check.’

Muslim mobs set two churches on fire in Cairo
during sectarian clashes that left 12 dead and more than 200 injured last night.
The deepening religious violence in Egypt added news tensions to an already chaotic and lawless transition to democracy.
Military authorities arrested 190 people, immediately sending them to military prosecutions and threatening the
maximum penalty against anyone attacking houses of worship.

Mob: Firemen fight the church fire surrounded by a crowd of angry Muslims
It was the military’s toughest response yet to a series of violent clashes between the two religious groups.
Mobs of ultraconservative Muslims attacked the St.
Menas church in the Cairo slum of Imbaba late Saturday following rumors that a Christian woman married to a Muslim man had been abducted.
Local residents said a separate mob of youths armed with knives and
machetes attacked the Virgin Mary church several
blocks away with firebombs.
‘People were scared to come near them,’ said local resident Adel Mohammed, 29, who lives near the
Virgin Mary Church. ‘They looked scary. They threw their firebombs at the church and set parts of
it ablaze.’

During Egypt’s 18-day uprising that ousted former President Hosni Mubarak several
months ago, there was a rare spirit of brotherhood between Muslims and Christians.
Each group protected the other during prayer sessions in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, the epicenter of
the revolution.
But in the months that followed the toppling of Mubarak on Feb.
11, there has been a sharp rise in sectarian tensions, fueled in part by newly
active ultraconservative Muslim movement, known as the Salafis.
The once quiescent Salafis have become more
assertive post-revolution in trying to spread their ultraconservative version of an Islamic way of life.
In particular, they have focused their wrath on Egypt’s Christians, who make up
10 percent of the country’s 80 million people.
Set alight: Christians look at a church which was set on fire during clashes between Muslims and
Christians in the heavily populated area of Imbaba in Cairo last night
Fighting: Egyptians gather next to a building belonging to Christians that
was set on fire during clashes between Muslims and Christians in the Imbaba neighborhood of Cairo
On Friday, a few hundred Salafis marched through Cairo celebrating al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden and condemning the U.S.
operation that killed him.
Egypt’s state news agency said of those killed,
at least six Muslims and at least three Christians were among those killed.
The body of one Christian was found inside the St.
Menas church, the agency said. The Health Ministry said 12 had died and more than 230 were injured, at least 11 of them critically.
The clashes were set off Saturday around sundown when word spread around the low-income neighborhood of Imbaba that a Christian woman who married
a Muslim was abducted and is being kept in the church against her will.
The report, which was never confirmed by local religious figures, sent
a large mob of Muslims toward the St. Menas church.
Christians created a human barricade around the church and clashes erupted.
Gunfire sounded across the neighborhood, and witnesses said
people on rooftops nearby were firing into the crowd.
Muslims alleged the Christians opened fire
first. Then crowds of hundreds of Muslims from the neighborhood,
in many parts instigated by the local ultraconservative Salafi sheiks,
converged on the area. They lobbed firebombs at homes and shops
and also at St. Menas church, setting its facade on fire.
Residents say Christians were hiding inside.
Muslims were chanting: “With our blood and soul, we defend you Islam.”
The army and police tried to break up the crowd by firing tear gas, but failed to clear the streets.
Troops surrounded the church after the fire was put out.
Later the same night, witnesses said a separate Muslim mob, mostly youths armed with machetes and knives, moved to
the Virgin Mary church nearby and also set it on fire.
Anger: A Christian shouts at Egypt’s Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy
in front of a church which was set on fire during
the clashes
Tensions: Egyptians gather next to a building belonging to Christians that was set on fire during clashes
The mob then dispersed to side streets, and local residents, including the neighborhood’s Muslims, tried to put
out the fire. At one point, they attempted to get into the closed mosque opposite the church to get water.
But the youthful mob armed with knives blocked Mohammed and others in his group.
‘They told us keep the mosque out of it,” said Mohammed, who lives near the church. “They were thugs.
The way they talk, they have no religious or political views.’
He said the firefighters and security arrived on the scene more than an hour
later.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, angry residents
stormed a six-story building near the St. Menas,
saying Christians used it to shoot at Muslims.
‘They were shooting from the roof, and they killed Muslims,” said 18-year old Yehia Ramadan. “We won’t stand by
idle.’
Flames were coming out of windows, and furniture were strewn along
the sidewalks. The building appeared to be empty, but
it was not clear when its residents fled.
Islamic clerics denounced the violence, sounding alarm bells at the escalating tension during the transitional period.
‘These events do not benefit either Muslim or Copts,’
Ahmed al-Tayyeb, the Sheik of al-Azhar told the daily Al-Ahram.
In the deadliest violence since Mubarak’s ouster, 13 were
killed in pitched street battles in March after Muslims torched
a church. That violence was also triggered by rumors
of a love affair between a Muslim woman and a Christian man.
A New Year’s Eve suicide bombing outside a Coptic church in the port city
of Alexandria killed 21 people, setting off days of
protests. Egypt made some arrests but never charged
anyone with the attack.

Russia is to build an ultra-modern city on a frozen island deep inside the Arctic Circle – in the
Kremlin’s latest move to back its claim to vast oil
and gas reserves under the polar ice cap.
Named Umka, after a popular Soviet polar bear cub cartoon hero, the
initial 5,000 residents will live under a vast dome to protect themselves from temperatures
sinking below minus 30C in winter.
‘This city will be of strategic importance as Russia’s
northern outpost,’ said architect Valery Rzhevskiy who has shown its modernistic designs to an approving Vladimir Putin.
Extraordinary: The city will cost up to £4 billion and be built on the remote island of Kotelniy,
in the Novosibirsk archipelago, some 1,000 miles from the North Pole
Vast: The Umka designs are based on the International
Space Station but in comparison is much larger – one mile long and 800
yards wide
Sources say it is likely to house soldiers, border guards and
secret service officers, as well as scientists and
explorers, as Moscow gets serious about claiming Arctic mineral riches.
All will enjoy a luxury lifestyle in the cocoon with its own specially regulated temperate climate – including many
facilities to make inhabitants of other cities envious.
‘We aim to have scientific laboratories, houses, but also parks with attractions, an Aqua complex, hotels and a
cathedral. Naturally there will be schools, kindergartens, recreation zones, a hospital, and sport facilities are planned, too,’
said Rzhevskiy.

‘We want people who will be living and working here not to realise
they are in some closed space with an aggressive Arctic climate
outside.’
The extraordinary venture – nicknamed ‘wonder city’ – will be built at a cost of up to £4 billion on the
remote island of Kotelniy, in the Novosibirsk archipelago , some 1,000 miles from the
North Pole, closer than any other Russian city.
Strong winds make it one of the most inhospitable places on the planet,
and even in summer it barely climbs over freezing point.

The Umka designs are based on the International Space Station, but it is vast by comparison – just short of
one mile long and 800 yards wide.
‘So far it’s the only project in the world with an artificial climate
and integral life support – just like on the space station. Not only is
it a new word in architecture, but in human living too.
We have used aero and space technologies while creating it.’

Electricity will be supplied by a floating nuclear
power station. Food wise, it will be totally self-sufficient with fish
and poultry farms, greenhouses, a wheat processing factory
and bakeries.
‘There will not be any rubbish at all, as the city
will have two factories converting all kinds into ashes.’
It will house workers for local mines and oil platforms which should pay the costs of
the development, it is claimed.
‘This project is designed to work on any surface, even on the Moon if needed,’ said Rzhevskiy, one of Russia’s top architects.
The ice city plans – currently with no fixed timetable for opening – comes as all countries with territory touching Arctic waters are
gearing up to make competing demands to the United Nations over underwater mineral
exploitation rights.
Western countries were stung when in 2007 Russian polar explorer Artur
Chilingarov placed his country’s flag in the Arctic seabed in 2007.
‘We must prove the north pole is an extension of
the Russian land mass,’ he said at the time.
A Canadian think tank this year even warned that ‘an arms race maybe beginning’, expressing concerns at the risk
of conflict.
The U.S., Canada, Norway and Russia have all boosted their naval presence in Arctic waters amid warnings of
a Cold War that could literally be cold – except perhaps at Umka.
